Supporting Positive Behaviour

Most of the time, for most of the students, pastoral care that comes from establishing positive relationships between students, staff and the wider school community, where everyone knows that we are all safe, valued, respected, cared for and are engaged in high quality learning, results in positive wellbeing outcomes. However, sometimes students’ wellbeing requires additional support to assist them develop a positive sense of wellbeing and to achieve faith and learning outcomes. A student may require additional support  for various reasons, including but not limited to; medical concerns in particular mental health, physical and emotional trauma and other factors.

St Michael’s uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) as a guide for processes to support positive behaviour. The MTSS for Academic, Wellbeing and Positive Behaviour Support, highlights the importance of meeting students academic and behavioural needs and indicates that most of these needs can be accommodated within the school context. The MTSS also acknowledges that there are times when individuals requiring Tier 3 interventions require external expertise to support student wellbeing and to build staff capacity in a particular area.
